BIG LEX

The Legend of the Blue Horse

Lexington is the heart of the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, the home of legendary horses and world famous bourbons. In the early spring there is a hint of blue in the grass, prompting early settlers to dubb the region, “the Bluegrass”.

Hidden just below the surface of our rolling hills lies an ancient limestone shelf that acts as a natural filter. The water that passes through this massive filtration system feeds the soil and grasses that grow strong horses unlike anywhere else in the world. (Those same waters produce the best bourbons in the world, too!)

Although no one has real evidence that blue horses exist, there are many tales of sightings across the region from legions of true believers. Legend has it that a horse called “Big Lex” turned blue from grazing in nourishing bluegrass pastures his entire life. Perhaps he found the very source of these limestone rich waters. Be on the lookout for a big blue horse as you drive around the backroads that are home to hundreds of horse farms in the area — you might just see the legendary blue horse yourself.

Child Safety Consultants

May 10, 2009 by Gene

Are you having a hard time figuring out how to make your home as safe as it can be for your child? Do you see yourself making major changes in the house to ensure a child-friendly environment?

Before you make any more unnecessary changes in your house, you might be better off acquiring the help of child safety consultants. These people are capable of creating a safe home for you, your children, and even your pets. They have the extensive knowledge on the potential hazards that are common in homes. Parents will also be provided with information on the risks that they might have otherwise missed knowing. The child safety consultants do not just point out the dangers present in your home, but are experts in creating safety plans as well.

Most parents do not know that there are actually people who can help them make their homes as safe as they want them to be. Some of those parents who have been doing the childproofing themselves, often end up with child safety products and equipment that are practically useless or unnecessary. Child safety consultants get rid of this problem. They are the most reliable people to ask about the hazards in the house and the possible ways to eliminate them. You are not left with the guesswork on how to keep you little one off the stairs or how to stop him from putting his hand in the oven.

Child safety consultants do not create a 100% child safe house. They do not guarantee to keep your kid from having tumbles and falls, but they do lessen the level of “danger” that your kid might get into.

Child safety consultants work by surveying your home. They have to know every nook and corner of the house and would need to go through every room so as to come up with a thorough child proofing plan. Parents should be prepared to be asked questions regarding their lifestyle so that the plan that the child safety consultants produce would fit well into their lives.

Parents can set their budget, although if you’re thinking of maxing out their services, you would leave it up to them to provide you with the plan and the estimate of the costs. The child safety consultants can also help parents acquire the most affordable and the most reliable child safety products in the market. Most of them even offer initial consultation services free of charge.

Child safety consultants are hired by parents whose main concern is the safety of their children. There are parents who’d rather create the childproofing plan and execute it themselves. However, with the children’s safety as the main issue, why compromise?

The Fire And Smoke Alarm

May 10, 2009 by Gene
Filed under Home Maintenance & Safety

When it comes to ensuring the safety of our loved ones, we will turn to a variety of safety measures that we implement on a daily basis. But the most important safety measure is that which stays in our home, its importance often overlooked. It is the fire and smoke alarm and it is crucial to the safety of those inside our homes. A properly installed and maintained fire and smoke alarm system can literally mean the difference between life and death.

In most cases, when you purchase a home it comes equipped with a fire and smoke alarm system. Generally speaking there should be one situated on the wall or ceiling in each level of your home. Smoke rises and a smoke alarm positioned correctly will act as the earliest warning system possible in the event of a fire. This advanced warning can give you time to get either put the fire out with an extinguisher – if it’s small and contained - or get out of the home before anyone is hurt.

If the home in which you are living does not come equipped with a fire and smoke alarm, you can pick up several right at your area hardware store or home improvement store. They are affordable and easy to install – often requiring just a few simple household tools. If you would feel more comfortable having a professional technician install your fire and smoke alarm then contact a certified alarm technician or even your area firehouse for information.

Most importantly, don’t cut corners when it comes to safety. If you have a choice between a baser model or a fire and smoke alarm with a higher standard rating, go with the higher quality alarm even if that means it costs a bit more money.

Another tip when installing your fire and smoke alarm is not to neglect the basement. Unfortunately, many fire fatalities occur in the middle of the night and could have been avoided had residents been given enough time to get of the house. Think of how much more time you would have if a fire that begins in the basement is immediately detected instead of waiting until it reaches the first floor.

Finally, the most important step in ensuring an effective fire and smoke alarm is proper equipment maintenance. Be sure to test the fire and smoke alarm every six months and change batteries when necessary. It is also important that you and your family have a fire plan including exit strategies and a meeting place outside the home.

Cheap Homeowner’s Insurance KY

May 10, 2009 by Gene

As is the case in virtually every other state, insurance companies in Kentucky don’t offer flood insurance to homeowners. Instead homeowners who are interested in this type of coverage can speak to their insurance agent about buying a flood insurance policy separately. This should really only be a consideration if the home is located in an area of the state where flooding poses a real risk.

If you are looking for a standard homeowner’s insurance policy in Kentucky a great place to turn to is the Internet. There are many resources available that directly relate to this particular type of insurance. Not only will you be able to find quotes, but you’ll also find valuable information pertaining to saving money on the insurance.

One of the most effective ways to get cheap homeowner’s insurance online in Kentucky is by taking advantage of discounts. Discounts are available for every type of insurance and home and renter’s insurance is no exception.

Some of the common discounts, that almost all companies offer, include those for deadbolt locks on exterior doors, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and storm shutters. Some companies in Kentucky also offer a percentage reduction for homes that are located near fire hydrants or fire houses as these homes have less of a risk when it comes to fire damage.

If you are a senior or you work from home, consider yourself lucky. The majority of homeowner’s insurance companies in Kentucky will offer a premium reduction for folks who are at home most of the time. If this is the case with you, be certain to make note of it when looking for quotes.

Once you do decide on a company, do a little background research on them to ensure that they have a solid reputation in the state. Although you do want to find a cheap insurance policy you also want to be certain that the company you choose will be there to back you up when you need them.
